Sandgate FC started life in 1969 as a junior section of Hayes Working
Men's Club. The first couple of seasons saw the players
turn out under the auspicious but rather long winded title of 'Hayes
Working Men's Club Minors'.
It was decided to change this to Sandgate after 'Sandgate Hall'
which was where the working mans club
was located in Hayes Town at the time (where Iceland and Argos
now are). Early games were played at various school grounds
(Barnhill, Belmore, Cranford Park and Harlington), with the admin
also being done in various locations including rented garages.
In March 1983, work was started on a purpose built clubhouse on
Bourne Farm Playing Fields Hayes.
The clubhouse and 'Doug Jones Memorial Hall' were finally open
for business on 7 October 1989 by Lawrie Jones MBE.
Various squads have toured abroad (including Holland in 1988) and
an American squad (Woodland Hills from Los Angeles) visited us the same
year.
The club applied for and obtained charity status, but since 1972
has regularly raised funds for more deserving causes at the annual charity
day.
Former players include Leicester City's Andrew Impey and Gillingham
FC's Guy Butters.
Guy, made his debut for Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 12 November
1988. He scored a goal in a 3 - 2 victory over Wimbledon.
